Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez was ceremonially received earlier today at the Presidential Palace in Paramaribo. The visit marks her first personal meeting with President Jennifer Simons and is focused on deepening cooperation between Suriname and Venezuela.
Rodríguez arrived on Thursday with her delegation at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport. She is paying an official visit to Suriname at the invitation of President Simons.
Suriname and Venezuela have maintained diplomatic relations for more than fifty years. During the visit, the heads of state and their delegations will discuss how these ties can be further strengthened.
Cooperation in various sectors
The agenda includes agriculture, fisheries, oil and gas, connectivity, tourism and education. Capacity building and the expansion of economic and technical cooperation will also be discussed.
Both countries want to make concrete agreements that should contribute to their development and economic resilience. The outcomes of the talks should provide direction for sustainable and results-oriented cooperation.
Minister Melvin Bouva of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation previously stated that Suriname and Venezuela have various opportunities to strengthen one another. The official visit should help further identify these opportunities and turn them into joint projects.
Wreath-laying at Bolívar bust
As part of the programme, President Rodríguez will lay a wreath at the bust of Venezuelan freedom fighter Simón Bolívar at Kerkplein.
According to the Surinamese government, the visit underscores the joint commitment of both countries to further deepen and sustainably embed their diplomatic, economic and technical relations.
