In two separate traffic accidents on the Afobakaweg on Sunday, September 6, a total of eight people were injured. All victims were transported by ambulance to the Emergency Department of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo.
The first accident occurred near pole 36 and involved a collision between a Toyota Mark X and a Toyota RAV4. The impact caused both vehicles to leave the road. The RAV4 overturned.
Five people sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Both vehicles were significantly damaged and had to be removed by a towing service. The exact cause of the collision has not yet been established.
Motorist swerves to avoid overtaking vehicle
About two hours earlier, another serious traffic accident occurred near pole 47. According to the preliminary police investigation, a motorist had to swerve to avoid a vehicle that was carrying out an overtaking manoeuvre.
While swerving, the driver lost control of the vehicle, left the road and came to a stop in the adjacent bushes. Three people were injured in this accident. They too were taken by ambulance to the Emergency Department.
The police in Paranam are investigating both traffic accidents. Road users are urged to comply with traffic regulations at all times, keep a sufficient distance and remain alert.
