The new French ambassador to Suriname, Benoît Denise, presented his credentials to President Jennifer Simons on Monday, September 14. The documents were handed over during an official ceremony at the Presidential Palace.
Denise takes up his post as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, succeeding Nicholas de Lacoste. For the diplomat, his appointment marks a return to Suriname after nearly fifteen years. During his previous posting, he was deputy head of the French diplomatic mission.
The ambassador said he retains strong personal and professional memories of his first period in the country. He also expressed his appreciation for the reception and organisation of the ceremony. According to him, this underscores the mutual appreciation and friendship between Suriname and France.
Suriname changed, ambassador says
Denise noted that Suriname has modernised since his previous stay, developed further and taken on a more international character. He pointed, among other things, to the greater variety of languages heard on the streets.
The architecture of Paramaribo and the peaceful coexistence of the various population groups also impressed him, he said. According to the diplomat, Surinamese society sets an example for others in this regard.
Attention to oil and gas sector
The French ambassador also reflected on the expected developments within Suriname’s oil and gas sector. According to him, France wants to contribute to this development, with both Suriname and France, as well as the European Union, benefiting from the cooperation.
Denise did not disclose in which specific areas France wishes to offer support or cooperation within the sector.
