Low diesel inventories put international fuel market under pressure

This is evident from an analysis by news agency Reuters of the international diesel market. According to the news agency, diesel inventories have declined sharply worldwide. Disruptions to Russian energy infrastructure as a result of the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East in particular have affected the availability of diesel and other refined petroleum products.

In the United States, diesel inventories are at their lowest level for this time of year since 1982. The US Energy Information Administration expects inventories to remain relatively low for much of 2027. The diesel market also remains tight in Europe and Asia.

Diesel is among the so-called middle distillates and is widely used globally for freight transport, agricultural machinery, industry, shipping and other economic activities. A prolonged high diesel price can therefore ultimately be reflected in the prices of goods and services.

Conflicts affect fuel market

A major problem is that international oil trade is being disrupted in several places at the same time. Tensions and military developments in and around the Middle East have increased transport costs and put traditional supply routes under pressure.

Russian refineries and other energy infrastructure have also been affected by the war with Ukraine. Attacks on refineries can limit the production and export of diesel and other petroleum products, leaving less fuel available on the international market.

At the same time, the international energy market remains sensitive to geopolitical developments. New disruptions to refineries, production sites or major shipping routes could again lead to higher prices, according to market analysts.

Additional diesel exports from countries including China could somewhat ease pressure on the market. However, analysts warn that inventories remain low and that unexpected production problems or further escalation of geopolitical conflicts could quickly cause new price increases.

Suriname not isolated from international prices

The development is also relevant for Suriname. Although Staatsolie (state-owned oil company) produces crude oil itself and has refining capacity, fuel prices and various components of the cost price are ultimately linked to developments in the international energy market.

The government previously introduced a price cap to curb sharp increases at the pump. When international market developments lead to a higher cost price while the local pump price is capped, this may mean that financial pressure on the government increases.

A prolonged international diesel shortage could therefore also pose a dilemma for the Surinamese government. If higher international costs are not fully passed on at the pump, the difference must be absorbed elsewhere. If protection is reduced or abolished, price increases may instead be passed on more directly to consumers and businesses.

Higher transport costs could affect prices

For the Surinamese economy, the potential effect extends beyond the price at the pump alone. Diesel is used extensively by trucks, buses, agricultural machinery, heavy equipment and various parts of the business sector.

When transport operators, farmers and other entrepreneurs have to pay higher fuel costs, these costs may ultimately be passed on in goods and services. For an import-dependent economy such as Suriname, higher international transport and energy costs may also affect consumer prices.

Developments in the international diesel market therefore remain important for Suriname to monitor. How large the eventual local effect will be will partly depend on developments in the global market price, the availability of diesel and government policy on local fuel prices.
