Police arrested 24-year-old K.P. after his 23-year-old girlfriend A.V. was seriously injured in a stabbing incident at a home in the village of Drepada, in the Brokopondo district. The incident took place on Thursday, August 27.
Preliminary police investigations show that there were problems within the relationship. When K.P. returned home that day, he allegedly wanted to have sexual contact with his girlfriend. After she refused, an argument reportedly broke out and escalated, according to police.
During the altercation, K.P. allegedly grabbed a sharp object and inflicted multiple injuries on A.V. with it. The victim was admitted to the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo for further medical treatment with serious injuries.
Police arrested K.P. The sharp object allegedly used in the incident has not yet been found.
Following consultation with the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service), the suspect has been remanded in custody pending further investigation.
