Opinion: Samsung innovates, but Apple wins over consumers

ChatGPT Image Sep 13 2026 11 20 41 AM Samsung innovates with foldable smartphones, but Apple knows how to dominate this technology culturally and commercially thanks to a strong ecosystem and smart marketing strategies.

Anyone who has followed the competition between Samsung and Apple for years can easily think that it is mainly about which company makes the best smartphone. Comparisons usually focus on cameras, processors, screens, battery capacity and the number of seconds by which a device opens an application faster.

Those who look further, however, see a much larger battle. Technology, marketing, consumer psychology, brand identity and even social status have become increasingly intertwined.

The smartphone has long ceased to be merely a device with which we make calls, send messages, take photos and browse the internet. For a large part of the world’s population, the device has become a personal possession from which a certain identity is derived. Consciously or unconsciously, people also communicate something about themselves and how they want to be perceived through their smartphone.

That is precisely where the battle between Samsung and Apple becomes interesting.

When we look solely at technological innovation, Samsung has built a strong case in recent years. The company has shown a willingness to look beyond the traditional smartphone and take risks with technologies for which it was not clear in advance whether consumers were waiting for them.

The clearest example is the foldable smartphone. Samsung has been experimenting with this product category for years. Apple presented its first foldable iPhone in 2026, immediately attracting considerable global attention.

This creates a remarkable situation: Samsung spent years trying to convince consumers that foldable devices are the next step in the development of smartphones. Apple is now entering the same market and, with one introduction, manages to draw a large part of the attention to itself.

This may contain the greatest paradox of the current battle between Apple and Samsung: Samsung appears to be constantly concerned with the future technologically, while Apple sometimes joins a development later, but then succeeds in making that development culturally and commercially relevant to a larger audience.

Being first is not enough

That difference may seem small, but from the perspective of consumer psychology it is particularly important. Innovation is not determined solely by the company that first brings a technology to market. At least as important is who can convince consumers that the technology is necessary, attractive and useful.

Samsung can invest in a new technology for years, develop several generations of a product, make mistakes and learn from them. Apple can enter later and, thanks to the strength of the iPhone brand, suddenly position a technology previously regarded as interesting but not necessary as the next logical step for the consumer.

That is why the arrival of a foldable iPhone means much more than simply the introduction of a new device.

Samsung can rightly say that it has been active in this market for years. It has helped develop the technology, introduced consumers to the concept and explored through different generations of Galaxy Fold and Flip models how a foldable phone can become part of everyday life.

Apple, however, does not need to challenge that argument. The company does not need to prove that it was first. Apple only needs to change the question from: “Who was first?” to: “Who made the product I want?”

For Samsung, that is a far more dangerous question.

Ultimately, the consumer is not a jury member awarding points to the company that first developed a technology. Consumers primarily want to know what that technology means for them.

That may be Apple’s greatest strength.

The power of the ecosystem

Over recent decades, Apple has built a brand that extends far beyond the technical features of its devices. For many users, an iPhone is not simply a smartphone, but part of a complete ecosystem in which hardware, software, services, accessories and daily habits reinforce one another.

Those who buy an iPhone are not only buying a device with a particular screen, camera and processor. They are also entering a world in which the Apple Watch, AirPods, MacBook, iPad, iCloud and other services are interconnected.

Leaving that ecosystem therefore becomes a greater psychological and practical step than replacing one phone with another.

Samsung also has an extensive ecosystem. The company has made major advances with Galaxy AI, wearables, tablets, laptops and connected household appliances. Yet the way Apple has built its products into one recognisable world around the consumer gives the company a psychological advantage that is difficult to counter solely with better specifications or more features.

Samsung may have a harder time there.

Samsung is essentially saying: “Look at everything my phone can do.”

Apple does not always need to say that. The company can make the consumer think: “This is simply my world.”

That difference is essential. Brands that become part of their customers’ identity are harder to defeat than brands that mainly compete on product features.

A consumer who focuses solely on specifications can switch relatively easily when a competitor offers a better camera, a larger screen or a more powerful processor. Someone who has incorporated a brand into daily habits, their social environment and personal identity will be far less likely to switch. That applies even when a competing product appears more attractive on paper.

The battle begins before the purchase

This brings us to a part of the competition that is much more interesting than the question of which phone is technically better: the psychological war taking place before a consumer even enters a store.

Why can Apple make a product launch a global topic of conversation, while Samsung sometimes has to work much harder to achieve the same emotional impact with technically impressive products?

The answer lies not only in the size of the marketing budgets, but also in the way both brands present innovation.

Samsung has increasingly positioned itself as the company that dares to experiment. It tries out new forms, pushes the boundaries of smartphone hardware and introduces technology that consumers may not yet have known they wanted.

Apple, by contrast, has built a strong reputation as the company that can package an existing technology in such a way that the public feels the product has become mature, accessible and relevant.

This creates the peculiar situation in which Samsung sometimes delivers the technical innovation, while Apple determines the perception of that innovation.

That does not mean Apple does not innovate. Nor does it mean Samsung merely copies technology from others. Both companies invest billions in research and development and compete in virtually every area of modern consumer electronics.

The main point is that innovation and the perception of innovation are two different things. A company can dominate the first without automatically controlling the second.

Two different arenas

Samsung currently has a strong argument when it comes to the battle for innovation. Apple, meanwhile, retains an impressive lead in the psychological battle for the consumer.

That does not mean Samsung has lost and Apple has won. It mainly shows that both companies are trying to win in different arenas.

Samsung wants consumers to dream about everything a smartphone could become tomorrow.

Apple wants to convince consumers that they already need something today which they may not have known yesterday that they needed.

Those who understand that difference also understand why the battle between Samsung and Apple has long ceased to be only about phones.

It is now about something much bigger: who gets the right to define the future?
