Para to conduct extra supervision at recreational resorts for four weekends

The district commissioner’s office of Para will intensify supervision at recreation resorts over the next four weekends. With additional deployment of the police and the Nationaal Leger, the safety and sense of security of visitors during the remaining holiday period must be improved.

The measures were discussed on Wednesday, September 9, during a meeting between district commissioner Patrick Kensenhuis, recreation resort operators and representatives of various government agencies. Among those represented were the Bestuursdienst, the police, the Nationaal Leger, Customs and the Maritieme Autoriteit Suriname (MAS).

Various bottlenecks were discussed during the meeting, including overcrowded recreation grounds, the lack of sufficient lifeguards, unclear closing times and illegally installed facilities. Enforcement and action against offenders were also discussed.

More visible police presence

The recreation resort operators stressed that a visible police presence in particular has a deterrent effect. “It works when the police are visible,” it was stated during the meeting.

Kensenhuis announced that cooperation with the police and the Nationaal Leger will be strengthened over the next four weekends. The proposals will be further developed and discussed with the agencies involved.

“We want to restore the sense of security among guests. Over the next four weekends, we will further strengthen and make visible the cooperation with the Nationaal Leger and the police,” the district commissioner said.

Logistical support is also being reviewed. The police previously operated from a base at Carolinakreek, from where patrols were sent to various recreation areas. It is being examined whether this method can be applied again.

Paid waste collection to begin

In addition to safety, the waste problem was also on the agenda. According to the district commissioner’s office, a great deal of waste is illegally dumped, particularly in the vicinity of Colakreek, Ayo and Carolinakreek.

The recreation resort operators and the commissioner’s office have agreed to begin paid waste collection next weekend. This measure is intended to contribute to cleaner and more attractive recreation areas.

The district commissioner’s office expects that the joint approach will lead to better supervision and greater cleanliness at the recreation sites in the coming weeks. The measures will be further developed and implemented in consultation with all parties involved.
