The government, healthcare institutions and trade unions have signed an agreement for the introduction of a new pay scale within Suriname’s healthcare sector. The arrangements are intended to lead to more transparent, balanced and fair remuneration for healthcare workers.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, by Minister André Misiekaba of Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Arbeid, the general directors of several healthcare institutions and the chairpersons of the trade unions involved.
With the signing, the parties have laid the foundation for the further introduction of the new salary structure. The arrangements must be carefully implemented within the various institutions. It was not announced when the new pay scale will actually take effect or what financial consequences it will have for employees.
Ten healthcare institutions involved
The agreement was signed by representatives of Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo, ’s Lands Hospitaal, Psychiatrisch Centrum Suriname, Mungra Medisch Centrum and Sint Vincentius Ziekenhuis.
Diakonessenhuis, Regionaal Ziekenhuis Wanica, Streekziekenhuis Marwina and Streekziekenhuis Atjoni are also involved in the arrangements. In addition, the agreement was signed by the chairperson of Regionale Gezondheidsdienst and the chairpersons of the trade unions involved.
According to the ministry, the government, healthcare institutions and workers’ organisations confirm through the agreement their joint commitment to a sustainable remuneration structure.
The new pay scale is intended not only to improve the position of healthcare workers, but also to contribute to the quality and continuity of healthcare in Suriname.
